Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is a safe, quick, and affordable procedure that can be used to correct tooth discoloration caused by staining, aging, or chemical damage. At Wright County Family Dental, we use Opalescence tooth whitening systems, which provide a safe and effective method for creating a beautiful and brilliant smile.
How Teeth Whitening Works
Teeth whitening is the removal of stains and discolorations from the enamel and dentin. The outer layer of the tooth is enamel, and beneath the enamel is dentin. Enamel is thin and typically much lighter, while dentin is darker and makes up the bulk of the tooth. Enamel can be discolored over time simply from age and outside sources like coffee, tea, tobacco, and other foods and beverages. Also, as we age, our enamel thins, causing more dentin to show through, making the tooth’s overall appearance look darker.
Opalescence whitening gels are formulated with either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, both of which are powerful whitening agents. These peroxide gels break down into water, oxygen, and reactive oxygen molecules. The reactive oxygen molecules then work to oxidize the bonds of discolored stain molecules, resulting in a lighter tooth appearance
